Aime Simone gave us an adorable answer when we asked him to list some of his inspirations. “My daughter, Ella," said the French newcomer. Sometimes it’s easy to forget there’s a whole person behind an artist, especially one of Simone’s profile. His beats, typically employing riveting trap hi-hats and distorted 808s, hit hard; his personal style consists of flamboyant fabrics and a totally cutting-edge haircut. In a previous life, Simone was part of the LA fashion scene (hence his stellar English). That said, his self-labeled “post-pop” sound carries a tenderness reminiscent of Billie Eilish, another inspiration of his. So maybe the cute shoutout to his daughter shouldn’t be that surprising. Although Paris is Simone’s home city, Berlin was the place where his musical career took root. He recorded his debut album there. ‘Say Yes, Say No’ arrived in 2020 and quickly garnered buzz in the German club scene. You can hear his sonic breadth on the two album standouts. “In This Dark Time” is borderline emo rap, whereas “Shining Light” glides along with airiness and finger snaps. Both tracks have earned more than 10 million Spotify streams. The former track was embraced by pro-Ukraine activists. The new ‘Oh Glory’ album further embraces life’s more shadowy moments, but on “Give Me Love or Give Me Nothing” he finds the power to issue an ultimatum. You can really feel the catharsis when the final chorus hits in this DSCVR performance. Guy has a lot of heart.
