AJ Mitchell - Girls - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2019, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
Ever heard "Two Little Birds Falling Out of a Tree"? Didn't think so. But you probably have heard AJ Mitchell, and that birdie tune was the first song ever written by the "Used To Be" singer. These days the 17-year-old Illinois native is enjoying a bit more buzz with tracks like "Girls" and "I Don't Want You Back" than he did with that childhood ditty, and we’re excited to include him in our Artists To Watch program. Mitchell’s story is centered on a steady belief of self. Early social media covers of Shawn Mendes and Jason Derulo hits initially earned him notice, and ever since, the singer’s career dreams have steadily advanced. Props from YouTube star Jake Paul arrived with a 2016 invitation to visit LA. Mitchell took advantage of the opportunity, and headed to SoCal for a short stint with Paul's Team 10 squad. That's about the time things started really popping. He cut “Used To Be,” “Somebody” and “Mind,” and the writing was on the wall. Always investing in his artistic side, the guy who loves nothing more that sketching out songs at the piano alone in his room, recently dropped his 'Hopeful' EP on the Epic label. It puts his strengths right up front; an effortless blend of pop and R&B gives everything a bit of fun, and vocally he’s a charmer with a seductive way of grabbing your ear. He says the title track is his favorite on the new record because its message of unfettered optimism is what drove him to get where he is. Check out his performances of “Girls” and “Hate That I Love You,” and you’ll agree: Mitchell is on his way.
