It's hard to imagine, but it took 17 years to create the first Iron Man. Initially, the film was supposed to be produced by Universal, and in 1990, their plan was for the story to revolve around an aging Tony Stark leading a reclusive lifestyle. Then, the rights went to 20th Century Fox, and according to their script, the film's villain was MODOK, and they invited Quentin Tarantino to direct. The studio sold the rights because they were already dealing with the X-Men and were afraid of handling two franchises. Well, New Line Cinema bought the rights, and according to their plan, Howard Stark was supposed to be the antagonist. Only after all of this did the rights end up in the hands of Marvel Studios, for whom this film became the first to be fully self-financed.
