Arlo Parks - Angel's Song - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
Arlo Parks considers herself a poet above all else. The London-based singer-songwriter spent her teenage years honing her lyrical touch at spoken-word performances. But it’s not only the likes of Rupi Kaur and Nayyirah Waheed (she professes love for both women’s poetry) that’s captured the 19-year-old’s imagination. Her erudite taste includes lots of contemporary literature and spans several musical genres. Check her nascent discography and you’ll find references to Mac Demarco’s cig preference and Gerard Way’s punk t-shirt aesthetic. Her old SoundCloud playlists are a melange of Earl Sweatshirt, EDM remixes and female Brits Little Simz and Biig Piig. As far as writing and making music, it was always just something she did in her bedroom - nothing crazy, just a hobby. But late last year she dropped “Cola,” her first single on the Beatnik label. A breakup song with crisp neo-soul production, its heartbreaking emotional tenor resonated with fans. Each release since - including last spring’s ‘Super Sad Generation’ EP - reflects an old-soul wittiness beyond the singer’s years. Openness about her bisexuality has also been an inspiration of sorts. “[Coming out] allowed me to talk about experiences and feelings I didn’t feel able to before,” she’s said. On Instagram, this King Princess fan posts collages of her own poems and pictures from her ever increasing pool of live shows. She definitely wants fans to have access to her thoughts. Check her Artists To Watch performances of “Angel’s Song” and “Super Sad Generation” and you’ll see intimacy is a priority.
