Beba - Tonica - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
The oldest post on Beba’s Instagram is a video of her ripping a freestyle over a Kendrick Lamar “HUMBLE” instrumental. Although the two artists come from opposite sides of the globe, they both speak the language of intense and meaningful rap. Born in Turin, the Italian rapper’s ability to spit with lightning speed without sacrificing fluid melody parallels the styles of Americans like Twista and Missy Elliot. And yet, many in the Italian hip-hop community have been hesitant to give her her due. It’s no secret that there - as it is in the US - female MCs battle prejudice simply because of their gender. In some instances, media and gatekeepers dismiss it pejoratively as ‘female rap.’ But Beba herself? She simply ignores the hate - good spitters are good spitters. "My way of relating to the environment and to other artists, whether men or women, is the same: for me there is only talent and passion,” she told Vice Italia earlier this year. “This is my way of managing the difference that a part of the public and media make between the two sexes: don't do it myself, don't go along with it.” Talent and passion were on full display in the DSCVR studio when Beba performed for us. Her all-white outfit matched our studio lighting, a striking visual that perfectly paired with her stunning performance. She killed a solo run of last year’s hit “Groupie” and then Rossella Essence, Beba’s frequent collaborator and producer, joined in on their new song “Tonica.”
