Cautious Clay - Stolen Moments - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
There’s power in the name Cautious Clay. Aside from the sly reference to a certain legendary boxer, Joshua Karpeh chose the moniker with on-brand thoughtfulness: “Cautious” reflects Karpeh’s production style. Particular. Detailed. The 26-year-old began deftly shaping ephemeral soundscapes more than half-a-decade ago, originally posting his beats to SoundCloud. In 2015, his “Ocean Eyes” remix caught the attention of the song’s original writer: Billie Eilish. With both artists taking early strides to their current success, Eilish’s inclusion of Cautious’ cover in an official remix package was a major moment for the young studio whiz. “At the time, I was thinking more in the production mindset, but I quickly learned how to write songs,” he told Billboard. “I’ve always had a strong sense of words, but I never really merged those two worlds together.” Born in Cleveland and raised by his mother on Earth Wind & Fire, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake and “a bunch of other folky shit,” he moved to Brooklyn in the summer of 2016, snagging a job in real estate to pay the bills. In this new world, Cautious found his literal voice - a raspy, soulful croon. He quit his day job a year later to focus solely on his music career. Singles trickled online - most notably “Cold War,” a pulsating eulogy to modern dating - which culminated in Blood Type, a standout debut EP that insightfully tackled identity. These days Cautious is invigorated, ready to take a few chances. Earlier this year, he slid into John Mayer’s DMs, leading to not one but two collabs with the iconic guitar player. And when Taylor Swift’s team hit him up for clearance to interpolate “Cold War” on her Lover track “London Boy,” he trusted his gut and acquiesced. In between all the action, a follow up EP, Table of Context, dropped early this year, along with a string of tour dates in across Europe and the US. Backed by a three-piece band, Cautious’ Artists To Watch session provides viewers a chance to hear unique iterations of fan-favorite “Stolen Moments” and a newbie with a super-tight groove and fuzzy guitar hues, “Erase.” Come for the sax solo, stay for the flute outro.
