Chika - Want Me. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
In 2018, Chika laid waste to Kanye West in a viral freestyle over an instrumental of “Jesus Walks.” The following summer, Lena Waithe, the Emmy award winning writer and LGBTQ activist, guest hosted The Kimmel Show and jumped at the opportunity to invite one of her favorite new rappers on. “I never really expected a video I made out of complete anger and disgust would get me here,” Chika confessed to Waithe during the convo. “It’s been a hell of a journey.” Indeed it has. Born in Alabama, the witty rhymer recently relocated to Brooklyn. So if you’re a little sick of raps about money, jewelry and cars, Chikas for you. Of course, the self-professed music snob still raps about gettin’ girls and schoolin’ fools, but the delivery is fresh and concise. But don’t take our word for it, check these DSCVR performances (and notice Chika’s two-man band solely consists of a cajon and a nylon string guitar). In both “Can’t Explain It,” which interpolates the Tamia classic, and “Want Me” she speaks her truth. No tracks or 808s needed. All heart and skill.
