Inking a major label contract is cool, but when it's with the one formed by your hometown hero? That’s the cherry on top. Terrible puns and geographic heritage aside, the new marriage between The Weeknd’s XO imprint and Toronto native Chxrry22 is looking like a perfect match. The sultry singer’s brand of alternative R&B is exquisitely moody, sinfully dreamy, and keen to divulge all the dirty details. Hmm, sounds familiar. Remember the dusky percussion that consumed Abel's early ‘Trilogy’ projects? You’ll find them stalking listeners of Chxrry’s 2022 EP ‘The Other Side.’ “I’m inspired by my city, my culture, and other powerful women,” she told us while citing her sound as a blend between Lana Del Rey and Rihanna. Earlier this year, the starlet-to-be performed songs from the EP at a sold out Toronto show - yet another feather in her cap. It also meant she was totally locked in for our DSCVR sesh. Dim the lights down low and dive into these luxurious takes of “Wasteland” and “The Other Side.”
