Trinidad is a Caribbean island close to Venezuela, named by Christopher Columbus on his third trip to the Americas.It was colonized by different European countries, including Spain, France, and England, which is why people there speak English now.
The island has a mix of people from different backgrounds because it had slavery for 300 years.
This is a very wealthy country, primarily relying on oil and gas, which is why it’s not so touristy. Nowadays People know it for its big carnival celebrations and music.
But there's a hidden side to Trinidad.It's caught in problems with illegal drugs and corruption. The island is a major stop for cocaine moving from South America to the US and Europe, which causes big problems in its society.That’s why the last few years, the murder rates have skyrocketed, making Trinidad, the 6th highest crime rate country in the world! That’s mostly due to gang wars in neighborhoods like the one I’m about to visit: 'Laventille.”
