From the last album Alan Wilder worked on, 1993's Songs of Faith and Devotion. Frankly, I don't think the band ever recovered following his departure. He was heavily responsible for the Depeche Mode "sound" and spent countless hours, uncredited, producing their songs. To be honest I haven't really enjoyed their output from Ultra on, aside from a single here and there.
