Talking to an interviewer last year, Dylan Fraser noted that, of all the gratification inherent in music making, “experimenting and seeing how far I can push genre” brings him peak enjoyment. It’s a statement that won’t surprise those familiar with the Bathgate native’s work. 2020’s “Vipers” announced him as the latest rebel keen to inject some distortion into alt-pop’s veins. This acolyte of Trent Reznor, Thom Yorke, and Tyler, the Creator expertly employs his heroes’ craft; he sinks his jaws into mainstream-ready sounds and drags them into the shadows to be pummeled by spiky drum loops, hyper-clipped vox, throbbing bass synths, and jagged guitar spurts. The pulsating “Nightmare” from last year’s ‘The World Isn’t Big When You Know How It Works’ lands on the pop side of the Fraser spectrum. Even so, its thesis revolves around the exhaustive toll of anxiety. He’s very forthcoming on the subject, and fans have responded to that vulnerability. His latest EP, ‘2030 Revolution’ picks up where ‘The World Isn’t Big’ left off. After blowing up during the pandemic, his first wave of shows has arrived. This DSCVR session - where he performed “Apartment Complex On The Eastside” and “It Took A Lot To Get To This'' - will be many followers’ first look at Fraser’s live chops. It’s impressive how quickly he physically embodies his music. And being the ardent experimenter that he is, there’s no limit to Dylan Fraser’s craft.
