Government-funded consumer subsidies are meant to make products and services more "affordable" for buyers, but they often end up raising the costs and prices of subsidized goods. Prof. Watts explains why, and contrasts products where competitive entrepreneurship pushes costs and prices down with those industries where limited competition, rising cost conditions, and consumer subsidies conspire to raise prices.
