Introducing Etta Marcus | Vevo DSCVR

While debuts typically signal the birth of a new artist, Etta Marcus is much more interested in the end of things on her mini album ‘The Death of Summer & Other Promises.’ It’s hard not to be intoxicated by the witchy brew of baroque folk-pop, 80s punk, and electro-synth that the South London singer has cooked up here. “Theatre” opens the project with a languidly plucked guitar dirge. One could be lulled into thinking she’s yet another low-energy singer-songwriter, but those assumptions are soon blasted away by full-throated cries for affection and waves of distortion. “Girls That Play” is the poppiest of the eight songs. Backed by a danceable rhythm section, its chant-whispered refrain “Heard you wanna be us” plays more as a mass invitation than a cliquey exclusion. Etta’s story begins years ago, when she sang at a summer fair. It continues here at our DSCVR studio, where she told us that she hopes listeners take a sense of “defiance” from her music. We hope this session pushes folks to digest her lo-fi 2022 EP, ‘View from the Bridge,’ along with her sweeping and more polished new single “Death Grips.” There’s that word again. For Etta, death is just the beginning.
