Introducing Flowerovlove | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023
One great thing about young artists is that their creativity has yet to be tainted by cynicism. This surely applies to Flowerovlove, the alt-pop project of 17-year-old Joyce Cisse, a precocious Brit who started dropping music as Flowerovlove a mere two years ago. “Kiss & Chase '' and “Unseen Miracles,” her first two releases, were marked by wispy clouds of guitar that allowed observational lyrics to shine through. On the more recent “Fat Wave” and “On My Way,” Cisse shows off thorns that prick with the aplomb of fellow London-based ladies Beabadoobee and Baby Queen. Smart outlets like i-D, Notion, and Clash Magazine have gotten behind Flowerovlove's work, and even more attention has arrived as Cisse leans into her fashionista side. This year she not only walked at Paris Fashion Week but also aligned herself in campaigns for brands such as Gucci, Maison Kitsune, and Adidas. That she rapped about the latter experience in her hip-hop foray “Malibu” is another example of the diary-like details weaved into her lyrics. “Paris, Fashion Week/We do that too.” Yeah, no big deal. This year’s “Get With You” is another example of Cisse’s talent for injecting the detached irony of her GenZ phylum into her personal interest in dreamscapes and Magritte-like weirdness (a wonderful surrealism-postmodernism combo percolates through her output, especially in her latest EP, ‘A Mosh Pit In The Clouds’). She once told an interviewer that “you need to serve yourself, otherwise, who will?” It was cool to see that Cisse puts just as much care into her stage act. Angsty emotions chase her in “Get With You.” So she frantically headbangs them away. Conversely, “Out For The Weekend” escapes into blissful hours spent listening to TV Girl with pals, and the sunset orange hues and evening sky purples of our intricate new DSCVR studio lighting setup really turn the performance into something infinite. It’s youth epitomized. Fandom is most fun when the hero has lots of layers, and Flowerovlove is one into which you can really sink your roots.
