Introducing GloRilla | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023
If GloRilla was an athlete, she’d be collecting her Rookie of the Year trophy. The rapper’s HitKidd-produced breakout banger “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” dropped on April 29, clobbering the competition and causing double takes with its impact - the GloRillafication of hip-hop 2022 was swift and deep. Some fans were caught scratching their heads: surely this brash anti-guy anthem has been around longer than just one summer? Extending the athlete metaphor, the Memphis native’s primary strength is her hard-hitting flow. Almost every line from the GRAMMY nominated “F.N.F.” works as a punchy example, but “at the red light/twerkin' on them headlights'' paints a vivid picture. Glo’s got a voice that seems drenched in Southern Comfort, a laconic murmur that lives in low-register land and packs a wallop when it strikes. Accurate comparisons have been drawn to Cardi B; hot on the heels of “F.N.F.,” it wasn’t surprising when the duo’s “Tomorrow 2” collab debuted in the Billboard Top 10. Add in “Blessed” and combine them all and you’ll find Glo’s three major videos clocking in the 100-million-views territory. Makes sense that Yo Gotti jumped on signing the 23-year-old to his CMG imprint, the South’s hottest rap label of the moment. Labelmate Moneybagg Yo called her the perfect “puzzle piece.” Another young and influential Memphis figure who’s diminutive frame belies his explosive power is Memphis Grizzlies star hooper Ja Morant, who won NBA rookie of the year in 2020. The Griz’ arena is only a few miles from the Frayser neighborhood where GloRilla grew up. This year the team invited Glo, who was raised as Gloria Woods, to narrate their season hype video. At the end of it she summarizes how we all feel about her: “What’s understood, don’t gotta be explained. This is big Memphis.”
