Greentea Peng - This Sound. An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
It’s hard to stand out in an ocean of new artists, but you’re not going to forget Greentea Peng. The UK singer’s tats stretch from her forehead to her legs, external emblems of her free spirit. And then there’s her name: her unique first name conjures an herbal vibe, and “Peng,” for you non-Brit readers, is slang for beautiful or sexy. The 27-year-old was born Aria Wells, and she describes the recent years of her music career as “a rollercoaster.” A 2018 trip to California found Peng working on a NorCal weed farm. The same year, she dropped her ‘Sensi’ EP, a proper intro to her psychedelic brand of London R&B. The following year, this Jamaican dub fan released “Downers,” a woozy take on getting high that remains her most-streamed song to date. Fans have been waiting for a proper album; weirdly enough, the pandemic led to its creation. So too did the death of her stepdad, who was integral in the shaping of her musical personality. “I was at a [emotional] point where I needed to fucking purge. I was like ‘Right, I’m ready to fucking make an album, let’s do this.’” So she hit the British countryside and created ‘MAN MADE,’ a debut which nods to The Clash, a band her step-father had introduced her to. “This Sound” and “Nah It Ain’t The Same” are from the record. Dig out your cowboy hat and let that bass line from the latter take you to a spiritual place.
