Holly Humberstone - Vanilla. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2021, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
There’s far less room on the Holly Humberstone bandwagon now than there was in June, when we urged folks to hop aboard her DSCVR at Home performance of “Overkill.” The number of voices proclaiming their fandom for the indie singer-songwriter from Grantham, England grows daily. Sir Elton John himself is one. In a recent interview between the two, the music legend proclaimed the 20-year-old’s songs “great,” and future prospects “amazing.” The crews at BBC1, Blogothéque and Jimmy Kimmel, are also buying Holly stock. “Wow, I was so early to the beginning of a new star,” enthused a YouTube commenter on the all-women skate vid for “On and On.” Often wrapped in a shimmering haze of reverb, Humberstone’s romantic ruminations clearly have the power to generate emotions. Her whispered vocals hold weight, as do the hushed soundscapes she creates. There’s always a ready-for-radio catchiness sunk in each of her songs - call it gritty pop attack. “I need a cure for all this apathy,” she sings in “Vanilla.” “I have my best nights without you.” Those are some pretty sharp daggers for someone not far removed from secondary school. A cover of Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” proves her interest in songwriting’s deeper side. So does her ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ EP, the title-track of which keeps getting major spins on alt radio. This “Vanilla” performance is also one you’ll wanna play multiple times. Share it with a friend, and they’ll be forever indebted. Best part? You can claim you knew about Holly Humberstone first.
