Introducing Idman | Vevo DSCVR
Vulnerability is a key R&B ingredient, and it’s the dominant flavor in Idman’s debut EP. Check the title: ‘Risk’ is about taking chances and perhaps not coming up aces every time. Over a shuffling beat that sounds plucked from ‘00s pop radio, lead track “Hate” follows a person trying hard to enact the famous mantra that it takes an honorable person to admit when they’re wrong. “But pride got in the way,” she confesses. Click to the next song. “Good Life” follows a similar thread, with a meandering drum break, repetitive ad libs, and staccato confessions of selfish feelings that make it the record’s most SZA-ish moment. A Toronto native with strong Somali roots, Idman’s African heritage plays a huge role in her worldview. A previous career working at a racial justice organization taught the singer-songwriter “what it means to have good movement, ecology and good movement ecosystems.” For a performer inspired by “black women, period” there’s no separating her identity from her artistry. Instead, the two sides strengthen the other. Also part of the LGBTQIA+ “tribe,” as she puts it, Idman stressed inclusivity at her first ever headlining tour. We caught up with her when she was rolling through NYC, and you could tell her spirit was full of joy from connecting with people every night. “If folks can see themselves in the parts of me that don’t always feel the most courageous and most brave, but still show up - I would be so grateful,” she told us between takes of “Beach” and “Still.” So forget perfection, says Idman, the beauty is in the edges. Words to live by.
