The 27-year-old mic fiend’s authority explodes from the speakers when he spits his way through tracks such as “Major Scrape” and “G-19.” The Gipsy Hill, London rapper has delivered a handful of mixtapes in the last few years, and with each he becomes more and more effective, his fierce approach taking on a cosmopolitan vibe. Call it forward motion. Progress has been part of the deal ever since he came on the radar with that ode that referenced the famous slight-of-hand master, David Blaine. Even back then, the heft of his output was obvious. That basso voice crackling through eerie samples. Ominous vibes housing vivid rhymes. For three years he hid his face behind a balaclava. Finally, he revealed it in the “Big Mood” video, from his ‘No Magic’ project. He’s been a harbinger of subtle moves that make drill reach more and more ears ever since, blending it with grime and straight-up rap, nodding to Afrobeats and bashment wrinkles. His latest project is ‘Joints,’ a collaboration with Blade Brown that has plenty of punch. “I like to explore and try different things,” he has said, “but it just so happened that everyone caught me in the drill bag and that’s what kind of blew up for me.” There was nothing but artistic fury flying around our studio when K-Trap hit for these Artist To Watch performances.
