Introducing: Lauren Spencer Smith | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023
Sometimes simpler is better. “My name is Lauren Spencer Smith, and I write songs about boys for your enjoyment.” That's how the Spotify page of the young Canadian singer behind “Fingers Crossed” describes her current job. It’s a true statement, but she’s left out a few elements. Like how well those songs are crafted, and how affecting her music can be. Tracks such as “Narcissist” and “Flowers” have raised goosebumps on the necks of numerous Smith fans - a growth demo for sure. “Young people fall for the wrong people, I guess my one was you,” she sings on the latter. Heartbreak is Smith's strong suit. The Vancouver Island teen, who made it to the Top 20 on ‘American Idol’ two years ago after wowing Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and (especially) Luke Bryan, has a gift when it comes to communicating emotional pain. That’s why “Fingers Crossed” took a wild ride on TikTok and hit the top of the iTunes chart the week after it was released. Listeners connect quickly to her work. Her 2019 Juno Award-nominated ‘Unplugged, Vol. 1’ proved that. Smith has said that a pal she met during her ‘Idol’ run helped tighten her writing skills. Now Smith’s process is architectural. She starts with a concept and moves into the specifics of the tale being told – what happened, how it felt, which instruments would communicate the story best. Wise, right? Craft is important. With her debut album on its way, and newly arrived holiday track “Single on The 25th,” a broader picture of her skills will be here soon enough. And by the way, Smith’s not all boohoo ballads; she’s promised that several of the new tracks are up-tempo pop. Her Artists To Watch performance of “Fingers Crossed” is as powerful as you’d expect.
