A Special Lecture on “Using a Systems Thinking Approach to Support
Effective Project Management” was conducted as an Online Session was conducted as a part of the Special Workshop arranged for MBA ( WD 2019-2021 Batch) PM Class at University of Colombo on 22nd July, 2021. Chaminda Hettiarachchi as the Subject In-Charge for PM hosted and moderated the session.
During the session, Prof. Zuern connected from Germany highlighted the importance and relevance of applying System Thinking in managing complex projects. He also demonstrated the real application by using a Simulation Software developed at Graduate School of University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Esslingen, Germany.
PROF. DR. SIEGFRIED ZÜRN, M.BC., the Director International Centre and Graduate School
University of Applied Sciences Esslingen, is a professor of Operations Management. He holds a doctoral degree in natural sciences from the University of Munich and a degree in Business Consulting from the University of Applied Sciences in Wismar. Before taking over his present function he served as Dean of the Graduate School of the UAS Esslingen.

Before joining the Esslingen University, he served more than 20 years as Project Manager, International Technical Consulting Manager, Plant Manager (France) and Technical Director in the construction materials industry and later on as Head of R&D for a regional business unit of a leading multinational chemical company. During his industrial career, he was already lecturing technical and management courses at the University of Munich, the ISM Munich and the UAS Salzburg, Austria.
Dr. Zürn’s main academic focus and core competences are in Industrial Project and Quality Management, Sustainability-, Technology- and R&D Management and System Thinking Modelling. He develops business games and simulations in the above topics that are used in education and business trainings.
