Liily - Wash - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
Musicians and filmmakers have tried to expose LA’s gritty underbelly for decades, and now Liily is giving it a shot. The band’s teenage members - bassist Charlie Anastasis, drummer Maxx Morando, guitarist Sam De La Torre and singer Dylan Nash - are a reflection of the City of Angels’ manic side. Young they as they may be (Maxx has been in the band since he was 14), Liily’s band members proudly consider themselves passionate apostles of the San Fernando Valley DIY scene. Two years ago, they founded Brekfast, a homegrown punk festival supporting underground bands from the greater LA area. Morando sums up the Liily ethos in CITY/VALLEY: a Concert Film of the Brekfast Festival, which documents one such gathering: “We try to go up there and go hard as possible and make everyone feel really uncomfortable.” With similar ferocity, Liily recorded and released “Toro,” which came out on Flush Records last August. The band’s feverish debut single propelled them to incessant touring across the UK and EU; a subsequent music video - depicting a performance marred by infighting and self-sabotage - flew past 1M streams. We captured Liily’s frenetic, chaotic energy when we had them in our NYC studio to play “Sold,” from last spring’s “I Can Fool Anyone in This Town” EP, and a new song, “Wash.” They caught Dylan moving between Alex Turner-style croons and a barrage of raspy shouts. Throbbing bass lines interplay with melodic, math-rock guitar hooks before it all gives way to fuzzy explosions. And physically, they prowled all around the place. Luckily you won’t catch any elbows watching from the safety of your screen.
