Grace Shaw always knew she wanted to be a musician, until she didn’t. “When I was a teenager I was very self-conscious,” Shaw told i-D last year. “I was like, I don't know any musicians, that's not a real job.” A concert by fellow Australian artist Allday changed everything. Standing in the crowd, Shaw, who performs under the moniker Mallrat, felt her dreams of making music for a living reinvigorated. In the span of a few years, the Brisbane-native has opened for Post Malone and hit the road with Maggie Rogers. Often wearing baggy clothes, eyeliner and untidy bangs, Shaw def looks like a teenager you’d bum a lighter from at the mall. But her aesthetic belies her sleek, genre-bending alt-pop. 808 kick drum sounds and outer space synths wind through each track of Shaw’s aptly-titled ‘Driving Music,’ which dropped in September. While in the States for a bit, Shaw caught up with us in the studio, where she performed “Charlie” - you’re likely to hear it alt radio these days - and “Drive Me Round.” Of course, we don’t condone watching while you drive, but the performances are something to look forward to when you get where you’re going.
