"Theatre of Pain" began in the wake of Vince Neil's tragic car accident. Neil's subsequent legal troubles, including charges of vehicular manslaughter and DUI, led to a sentence that included probation and a mandated attempt at sobriety. This period of enforced sobriety for Neil coincided with the recording sessions, casting a long shadow over the creative process and fueling the album's introspective and often somber tone.
