Prince & Ingrid Chavez: Sign 'O' The Times/Justify My Love (Justify My Remix)

Around 1987 Prince met Ingrid Chavez. He called her "The Spirit Child" and worked with her on the recording of his next album Lovesexy. He also encouraged her to set her softly spoken poems to music. He even produced a good part of Ingrid´s first album, which would eventually be released in 1991.

During that time Ingrid also met Lenny Kravitz, to whom she played her track Justify My Love. Lenny liked it so much, that he asked her for the tape, which she gave to him.

Lenny took the track, gave it to Madonna and produced it with her as a single, which was released in late 1990. Not only did they use (most) of the original lyrics without credit, they also utilised Ingrid´s unique style of half-whispered, half-sung delivery.

When Prince heard the song, he instantly recognised it as Ingrid´s work and encouraged her to take legal action. Ingrid´s album had not come out at that time and he knew that people would accuse Ingrid of being a rip-off.
The case was eventually settled out of court and Ingrid would receive writers credit for Justify My Love.

In 2020 Ingrid finally released her amazing version of the song, which can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2dP3r-YE7c
For this remix/mash-up I decided to merge it with the super funky Sign 'O' The Times which Prince had released around the time when he first met Ingrid.

It´s surprising how well these two tracks flow together.
Ingrid´s version replaces the Public Enemy break-beat rhythm with a sultry, straight groove. The combination of both tracks adds a mellow flow to Prince´s vocals while injecting some heavy funk over Ingrids' sexy whispers.

The video I edited to the song shows people behaving strangely in hotel rooms and corridors, all filmed in black and white...just like the scandalous original from 1990.
