renforshort - virtual reality | An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
There’s something exciting about an artist playing with different sounds in the early days of their career. Toronto teen Lauren Isenberg, aka renforshort, has that kind of experimental curiosity. Two of her initial tracks were the downtempo electronic epic “waves,” and the more pop-forward “mind games.” When her ‘teenage angst’ EP arrived in 2020 it brought thrumming punk basslines, crunchy guitar hooks and, as-promised, and angsty lyrics with it. Of course, early fans in the Ontario region knew ren loved rockin’ out. When not busy covering Gorillaz, she’s described her style as “a little more fun” than grunge. A local paper called her “guitar-forward alt-pop,” an accurate approximation as far as the increasingly futile task of nailing down genres goes. Her track “idc” is a perfect example of hip-punk's new wave, colliding electronic trap hats with aughts-era guitar blasts - think MGK and 24kGoldn. “afterthoughts,” one of her most recent and most popular tracks, however, is a delicate ballad. So is “time machine.” ren’s DSCVR performances include a rendition of the previously unreleased acoustic gem. Of course, she had to rock out, too, and “virtual reality” kicks plenty of butt. Watch these performances, share ’em with a friend, and you can tell everyone you were on ren’s team from the jump.
