Research Overture
This series of talks focuses on new research topics being developed at Future Cities Lab (FCL) Global. Each seminar is an opportunity for the team leading the research to articulate their aims and aspirations, as well as the challenges they expect to face. It is also an occasion for participants to help shape the research through dialogue.
1 | Agropolitan Territories
Presented on 2 June, 2021
This first seminar in the series introduces research on urbanisation and food production in Monsoon Asia. The research proposes an ‘agropol-itan’ outlook to urbanisation based on a deeper relationship between future cities and future agriculture. The focus of the study is Monsoon Asia, where urbanisation is rapid and intense, and where most of the world’s staple cereals are grown (90% of the world’s rice, 45% wheat, and 25% maize). The research will focus on cases in China, India and Indonesia. The work aims to contribute to city-making practice through a set of new architectural, urban design and settlement system typologies for the region.
