Coming up, it’s a full-speed, kick-you-in-the-teeth, adrenaline-fueled rocker… inspired by an 80s legend who literally had a death wish. Motley Crue and their once-in-a-lifetime rocker Kickstart My Heart from their 1989 classic Dr. Feelgood. It all happened on one notorious night back in 1987, Nikki Sixx the decadent rockstar overdosed after a night of reckless abandon… scaring the hell out of his bandmates Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Mick Marrs, and his fans in the process. Pronounced clinically dead, rumors of his demise spread like wildfire. And it would take some serious Pulp Fiction needle-piercing action to bring him back to life. He would actually say he was out of body witnessing his death Then he woke up in the hospital. and he ripped out his tubes and escaped. He bummed a ride off a fan who thought they were seeing a ghost and then when he got home he shot up again! Well needless to say the incident’s aftermath led to his band’s biggest song ever and it would eventually help him get clean. The unbelievable story is next.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes we have covered You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC, Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard, and Enter Sandman by Metallica.

Today we are telling the infamous story of Motley Crue’s no-holds-barred rocker Kickstart My Heart, from their 1989 album Dr. Feelgood. It’s an indisputable fact. Motley Crue is one of the most influential and popular metal bands of the 80s, 90s, and on into the new millennium. Let me give you just a few stats to back that up. Motley Crue has sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide. 6 out of their 9 studio albums have reached the Billboard Top 10. Plus 3 more of their compilation albums have as well. Motley Crue also has 8 platinum or multi-platinum albums to their name. And as as far as singles go, the band boasts 28 Top 40 Mainstream rock hits, and some noteworthy Hot 100 appearances. The list is far too long to give you here, but here’s a taste…

Motley Crue’s classic lineup is comprised of Nikki Sixx on bass, Tommy Lee on drums, Mick Mars on guitar, and Vince Neil on vocals. In the 80s they established themselves, not only as rock hit-makers but also as poster boys for heavy metal hedonism. The band is as famous for their extracurricular activities as for their music. Sex, drugs, public feuds, & later tell-all exposes-are synonymous with the name Motley Crue.
