“I hate myself/but I do it in private,” divulges Sam Tompkins in the chorus of “See Me.” On the surface, this line is a bit ironic. There’s nothing private about more than 500k Insta followers and 2 million monthly Spotify listeners. Especially when all those ears are tuning in for Sam’s totally raw self-investigations. But if you really think about it, this line is about a Past Sam; On Stage Sam is the triumphant version. It makes sense that the 26-year-old Brit is a devotee to Don McClean, a legendary songwriter who welded melancholy and pop together using an acoustic guitar as his blowtorch. In 2021, Tompkins’ cover of a Bruno Mars ballad was sampled by Jar Choi for “To the Moon,” a clip of which became so ubiquitous on TikTok in 2021 that listening to the song by itself feels kinda weird. The blueprint for how artists are supposed to capitalize on such newfangled internet clout remains a mystery; but impressively Sam did it. He’s trickled out a handful of singles of varying energy. “Lose It All” waxes plaintive about the “nightmare” regrets of not expressing feelings. Follow up track “Die For Someone” rides a kick-snare 80s beat that recalls Post Malone’s pop efforts. These DSCVR sessions really show off the power of his voice, which he molds after two Justins: Bieber and Timberlake. Get ready to get in your feels.
