CHVRCHES on Sasha Sloan’s Songwriting and Star Quality
“It’s more than surface level with Sasha,” says CHVRCHES’ Martin Doherty about our latest DSCVR artist, Sasha Sloan. His bandmate Iain Cook agrees. “It’s unusual that somebody with a voice like that also has an amazing songwriting ability. She really is the complete package.” We think so, too. The Boston-native and LA resident has written for Camila Cabello ("Never Be the Same") Steve Aoki ("Just Hold On") Tinashe ("Faded Love"), as well as as Charli XCX and Dua Lipa and other prominent pop stars. But enough of the name-dropping. It's obvious that Sloan is good person to have on your team if you're looking for a fetching combination of mood and hooks. Let's talk Sasha Sloan the singer. Those who've fallen for her new 'sad girl' EP and previous tracks know that Sloan has a way with waxing forlorn and making a bittersweet vibe come off as wonderfully seductive. “I think I was honestly scared of not being a shiny pop girl,” she says, “and not having songs that are always happy and upbeat and sound like a radio song, and now when I’m writing I’m not scared to be like…'last night I was crying and I was fucked up and that’s okay.'”
