Track 3 from Tobin Mueller's latest solo piano CD, "Instead of Heaven". Beautiful, inventive, flowing with grace and narrative ease. A melding of modal New Age and contemporary classical, Mueller's style builds on the post-bop jazz of Brad Mehldau, Fred Hersch, Keith Jarret and others.

"Instead of Heaven" is a song cycle of meditative piano solos inspired by Greek myths. The video includes a textual map of legend and lore, incorporating gorgeous artwork.

This track focuses on Selene, goddess of the moon, eye of the night. She sees our dreams and nurtures them. It begins with lush progression of night-drenched chords, searching for a key. Then a steady rhythm of exploration sets in, slowly evolving into a starry anthem (with hints of Celtic folk).

A daughter of Titans, Selene falls in love with the mortal shepherd Endymion and bears him fifty daughters. She had several other lovers as well, including Zeus and Pan, but this tribute is to her love for the shepherd. The piece ends with a sense of freedom and ease.

"There are special moments in each composition that are uniquely breathtaking. Inventive chord progressions add to the musical language of both modal post-bop jazz and neo-classical piano. Mueller's music is often virtuosic yet avoids showiness. Everything feels organic and true. He requires the listener to pay attention yet also frees them to go on imaginative tangents. Storytelling on a deeply poignant level infuses every piece, expressing a singular personal honesty while revealing universal emotions. A rarity." - George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly
