Introducing SIPHO. | Vevo DSCVR
One thing about maturing from youth to adulthood is that life gets more complex, thorny, and murky with each passing day. That’s why there’s always room for a guy like SIPHO., a just-into-his-twenties musician who’s smack in the middle of that learning period, but has the ability to take a 10,000 foot view of the whole process. “I’m neither an adult nor a child now,” he’s said while reflecting on his mindset while making his ‘PRAYERS & PARANOIA’ album. “I’m in that space in between.” During the pandemic, darling indie label Dirty Hit tapped the Birmingham native. It was a bet that quickly paid off, as his electro-gospel hymnal “BEADY EYES” grabbed plenty off BBC spins and playlisting. Follow-up track “OCCASION” dipped into a dusky R&B feel. It was such a vibe that NBA star Jimmy Butler showed it love on his Instagram. Sonically, you never know what you might get from a SIPHO. track. “SOBER” has a drum & bass engine; “THE CHEMICALS” could be from a New Orleans big band led by Jon Batiste. Rather, spirituality and a self-described “cosmic” perspective links his discography together. Check the cover art of the new album - you’ll see a prayer rug, dozens of books, and a reference to the famous photo of Malcolm X staring out the window. He describes it as a “juxtaposition” of id and super-ego. Heady stuff, but it’s all backed up in the music. Clearly there’s a depth to SIPHO.’s artistry that’s quite rare, and we can’t wait to see what he has in store. For now, we captured DSCVR performances of tracks from the new album, and this first one is nothing short of a religious experience. Stand up, clap along, and find a little truth.
