thuy - playing tricks (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
Putting on a thuy track feels like wrapping yourself up in the silkiest scarf you own. It’s warm. It’s familiar. And it provides a little boost of swag. That said, for as much as R&B has been the main ingredient, thuy - pronounced “twee” - prides herself on using many genres for flavor. “I like to do things that I like to do,” the Bay Area native has said about her genre curiosity, which includes frequent forays into pop (the title track from her new ‘girls like me don’t cry’ EP, for one) and hip-hop (“chances” and “in my bag,’ from her last EP). What’s more important to thuy is that her music carries emotional weight. “If I cry, I know it’s a good song,” she maintains. With a childhood that included lots of moving, one constant for thuy and her parents was karaoke night; by high school, her angelic voice was outshining those artificial backing tracks. After she grabbed a degree from UC Santa Barbara, music returned to forefront. The title of the honeyed vocalist’s debut EP, ‘i hope you see this,’ proved that manifestation is a real thing - to date it’s been streamed more than 50 million times. Whoever she wanted to see it, def did. Importantly, thuy’s a vocal advocate for AAPI voices, particularly aiming to smash stereotypes within the music industry. “At the end of the day it’s about who I am, my culture, my identity.” ‘girls like me don’t cry,’ further hones in on themes of perception vs. reality. With funky bass lines, crisp production, and catchy hooks, thuy makes vulnerability go down real easy. One second she’s bopping around our DSCVR studio, the next she’s looking right in the camera and getting serious. With thuy, you feel like you’ve known her all along.
